Eldborg Volcano

Eldborg Volcano

A beautifully preserved volcanic crater on Snæfellsnes — hike to its rim for sweeping views over Iceland's dramatic lava fields.
Eldborg ('Fire Castle') is a strikingly well-preserved volcanic crater rising 60 meters above the Snæfellsnes lava fields, formed around 5,000–8,000 years ago. Its near-perfect circular shape and steep inner walls make it one of Iceland's most photogenic craters. A moderately demanding hiking trail leads up to the rim, rewarding trekkers with panoramic views across the peninsula's lava fields and coastline. The surrounding Hnappadalur valley's lush meadows contrast beautifully with the dark volcanic rock.
